Textile Workshops for Youth: A Journey in Repair and Redesign
Extended University Project | 2019 - 2020
Throughout my studies, I conducted several textile workshops focused on repairing and redesigning garments for youth schoolers. These workshops aimed to invite and motivate teenagers to explore the world of textiles, teaching them various repair and mending techniques, and guiding them to invent and implement their own designs. Collaborating with secondhand shops and schools, we organized an exhibition showcasing the teenagers' creative work.
My Role:
Together with my student colleague Martha Von Guenther we were responsible for the entire process of these textile workshops, which included organizing the events, developing the designs, preparing all necessary materials and tools, and conducting the workshops.
Structure
The workshops were structured in three phases:
Encountering the Participants: This initial phase involved meeting the teenagers, introducing them to the workshop objectives, and fostering a welcoming and enthusiastic atmosphere.
Engaging with Textiles: In this phase, I engaged participants in the topic of textiles, explaining different repair and mending techniques, and encouraging them to think creatively about redesigning garments.
Hands-On Workshop: The final phase was a practical, hands-on workshop where participants applied what they learned, inventing and implementing their own designs. This phase emphasized experiential learning and creativity.
Exhibition
The culmination of our efforts was an inspiring exhibition, organized in collaboration with a secondhand shop. This event allowed the teenagers to proudly display their redesigned garments and creative projects. Seeing their pride and satisfaction was incredibly rewarding. The exhibition celebrated their skills, creativity, and hard work, highlighting the positive impact of hands-on learning and fostering creativity and sustainability among youth.
These workshops not only equipped teenagers with valuable skills but also instilled a sense of environmental responsibility and artistic expression. The experience was pivotal in my development as a designer, shaping my approach to design today.
